Description: This paper looks at the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) from the perspective of public health policy. It argues that over the past forty years, the CAP has encouraged the production of meat and dairy products at the expense of fruit and vegetables and that this is one factor contributing to a lack of adequate nutrition and associated health problems, such as obesity and heart disease. The paper suggests that the CAP subsidies be changed to promote the production of healthier foods and by finding industrial uses for surplus dairy products, rather than using them in food products.
